This page is to record and let you know what we’re up to this winter. We have an exciting time coming up, with new rolling stock, a new locomotive and the second point to construct down at the bottom station, Weldale.

Keep checking back to see our progress!

24 October 2007

The first job of the winter was to get the two new coaches on the rail. This was done with the help of Steve, the farm park assistant and the big forklift. They went on relatively easily, and then Pioneer was lifted over the rails. Pioneer had its wheels put back on, then lowered back onto the track.

A start was made on re-treating the sleepers down the line, and during this process, any rotten ones will be replaced.

03 November 2007

Pioneer was started today and run down the track for the first time in just over ten year. All went well, with no problems on any of the track work, and seems it will make a very suitable acquisition for the line.

Pioneer was also painted green to tidy it up ready for the line reopening.

10 November 2007

A start was made on clearing out the contaminated ballast around the bottom end of the railway.

Weed killer was applied to the ballast around the far end of Welldale in preparation for the new point and head shunt and the whole area given a good strimming to tidy it ready for track laying

The treating of the sleepers is going well, with 2/3rds of the railway now coated up.

Our good friend Colin Peake submitted 2 designs for Pioneer and they will be put to the vote.

17 November 2007

The second point at Welldale has been started, with all the stock rails sorted, bent and put in place ready for the sleepers arriving. The general shape is forming nicely and when all is fixed, should progress quickly.

27 December 2007

The second point at Welldale is coming on well, the sleepers are all treated and the dressing of the drainage pipes is due to start in the new year. The steps behind the tunnel are now completed. Good progress is being made on the ballast cleaning, however this is now being held up slightly by the weather.

27 January 2008

The ballasting on the second station, Welldale, is now complete and the construction of the point is well underway, starting with the toe. The new coaches have had a lick of paint below the solebar and we are waiting better weather to carry on with the bodywork. We have a new toy! A petrol cement mixer that should see lots of use around the railway with it’s first job mixing mortar for the tunnel mouths around the large drainage pipes, which are starting to look good.

10 February 2008

The foundations for the stonework are in and the first few blocks are set in mortar. The frog assembly for the point is now welded up and fixed in place. The stock rails now have the cut-outs for the blades and the check rails welded in position. These are just awaiting cleaning up and fixing which should be done by the 12th. The coaches are looking really good, and these should be in use for Easter.
